Training Sessions on Various Experimental Instruments for New Members

We are currently conducting a series of training sessions for the new fourth-year students to help them learn how to use various experimental instruments. In our laboratory, we use not only stable isotope mass spectrometers but also a wide range of mass spectrometers and ion chromatographs, each with its own unique features. These instruments are not easy to operate without proper instruction.

To ensure a smooth transition, graduating and completing students begin passing down their knowledge on instrument use starting in March. However, it can be quite difficult to manage effective handovers, as the seniors are busy revising their theses and preparing to move, while the new fourth-year students are often juggling job hunting at the same time. As a result, I end up teaching many of the skills myself once April begins.

That said, as the start of the academic year is also a very busy time for me—with reports and administrative responsibilities piling up—things don’t always go as smoothly as planned. Still, we’re doing our best together to make it work.

I always encourage students to ask questions and take the initiative in their learning. When they do, their understanding deepens rapidly, and they become able to operate the instruments much more quickly. So I tell them, “Be proactive!” Keep it up, new fourth-years

—you’ve got this!
